Juwayriya bint al-Harith was the daughter of al-Harith ibn Abi Dirar, the chief of the Banu Mustaliq tribe. She was known for her intelligence, beauty, and noble lineage. Her life changed dramatically after the Muslim forces defeated her tribe during a battle. She was taken captive, but destiny had greater plans for her.
After her capture, Juwayriya sought help to pay her ransom. When the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ met her, he offered to pay the ransom and then married her. This marriage was not only a bond of faith but also had significant social impact.
When the Muslims learned that the Prophet had married Juwayriya, they felt it was inappropriate to keep the relatives of the Prophet’s wife as captives. As a result, hundreds of members of her tribe were set free. This act transformed hostility into respect and led many from her tribe to embrace Islam.
Juwayriya bint al-Harith was a woman of deep faith and devotion. She spent long hours in remembrance of Allah, engaging in dhikr (remembrance) and worship. The Prophet ﷺ once praised her for her continuous devotion, mentioning that her consistent remembrance of Allah equaled hours of worship.
Her presence in the Prophet’s household was marked by humility and piety. She lived a simple life, dedicated to prayer and serving Islam.
As one of the Mothers of the Believers, Juwayriya was honored with the respect given to all wives of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Her story reflects how her marriage became a source of mercy and freedom for her people, showing Islam’s values of compassion, justice, and unity.
Juwayriya bint al-Harith lived in Medina after the Prophet’s death. She passed away in the year 50 AH during the caliphate of Muawiyah ibn Abi Sufyan and was buried in Al-Baqi cemetery.
Her life remains a powerful example of how faith, wisdom, and compassion can change not only an individual’s destiny but also the fate of an entire tribe.
