Night Time Prayer for Kids: A Muslim Parent’s Guide

27 September, 2025

Helping children develop a strong relationship with Allah (SWT) starts at a young age. One of the most effective ways to nurture this bond is by introducing them to night time prayers and supplications (duʿāʾ and adhkār) before going to sleep. For Muslim parents, bedtime can be transformed from a routine moment of rest into an opportunity to instill faith, comfort, and spiritual grounding in the hearts of their children.

This article provides a practical, easy-to-understand guide on night time prayer for kids, supported by authentic Islamic sources. It explains the significance of bedtime supplications, shares simple prayers children can learn, and offers tips for parents to encourage consistency.

Islam teaches that the moments before sleep are filled with blessings. The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) guided Muslims to recite certain verses and adhkār before resting, as protection from harm and a way to remember Allah even during sleep. For children, this practice carries additional benefits:

  1. Spiritual Security: Remembrance of Allah protects the heart from fear and anxiety at night.

  2. Building Habits Early: Habits formed in childhood remain strong in adulthood.

  3. Strengthening Identity: Night time prayer reminds children that their faith accompanies them even in private moments.

  4. Encouraging Calmness: Supplications ease the mind and prepare the body for restful sleep.

Below are authentic and simple prayers that parents can teach their children. It is recommended to start with the easiest ones, gradually adding more as the child grows.

Supplication (Duʿāʾ) Arabic Text Translation
Before sleeping بِاسْمِكَ اللَّهُمَّ أَمُوتُ وَأَحْيَا In Your Name, O Allah, I die and I live. (Bukhari)
Upon waking الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَحْيَانَا بَعْدَ مَا أَمَاتَنَا وَإِلَيْهِ النُّشُورُ All praise is for Allah who gave us life after having taken it from us, and to Him is the resurrection. (Bukhari)
Protection from fear اللَّهُمَّ قِنِي عَذَابَكَ يَوْمَ تَبْعَثُ عِبَادَكَ O Allah, save me from Your punishment on the Day You resurrect Your servants. (Muslim)
O Allah, forgive my sins, drive away my shayṭān, free me from my burdens, and place me among the highest assembly (of angels). (Tirmidhi)

The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) taught that reciting certain surahs before sleeping provides protection and blessings:

  • Surah Al-Fātiḥah: The opening chapter, a reminder of Allah’s mercy.

  • Surah Al-Ikhlāṣ, Al-Falaq, and An-Nās: Reciting these three surahs together three times protects from evil. (Bukhari, Muslim)

  • Āyat al-Kursī (2:255): The Prophet (ﷺ) said that whoever recites it before sleeping will have protection from Allah until the morning. (Bukhari)

For children, parents can start with Surah Al-Fātiḥah and Surah Al-Ikhlāṣ, then gradually introduce the others.

Teaching children night time prayers is not only about memorization, but about creating a warm and loving spiritual environment. Here are some practical tips:

  1. Lead by Example: Children imitate what they see. If parents recite adhkār before sleep, children will naturally copy them.

  2. Keep It Short: Start with one or two simple supplications. Long recitations may overwhelm young children.

  3. Bedtime Routine: Make prayer part of the nightly routine, just like brushing teeth or reading a story.

  4. Use Gentle Reminders: Encourage without forcing. Praise their efforts and progress.

  5. Explain the Meaning: Children connect better when they understand what they are saying.

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “The likeness of the one who remembers his Lord and the one who does not remember Him is like the living and the dead.” (Bukhari, Muslim)

For kids, this remembrance before sleep has unique benefits:

  • Spiritual Protection: Safeguards from nightmares and whispers of shayṭān.

  • Peaceful Sleep: Helps the child relax and rest better.

  • Sense of Safety: Knowing Allah is watching over them brings emotional security.

  • Positive Habits: Builds a foundation of trust and love for Allah.

Children learn best when activities are enjoyable. Here are some creative ways to make night time prayer more engaging:

  • Bedtime Stories from the Sunnah: Share short stories about the Prophet’s bedtime routine.

  • Prayer Chart: Create a simple chart where the child can mark each night they remembered their prayers.

  • Family Recitation: Recite surahs together as a family before sleep.

  • Rewards and Praise: Celebrate consistency with small rewards or kind words.

  • Child is too tired: Keep it short and gentle, focusing on one duʿāʾ.

  • Difficulty memorizing: Use repetition and break down phrases into smaller parts.

  • Lack of interest: Add fun elements, like storytelling or singing in a soft, calm voice.
