The People of Thamud Reject Prophet Saleh
The people of Thamud refused to accept Prophet Saleh's message. They questioned him and demanded a miraculous sign that would prove his prophethood.
Instead of accepting the truth, they challenged Saleh to produce a sign from Allah. Allah then gave them a remarkable miracle: a she-camel.
The Quran refers to this miraculous animal as “the she-camel of Allah”, emphasizing that it was a special sign from Him.
Allah says:
“This is the she-camel of Allah—a sign for you.”
(Quran 7:73)
The miracle was not simply intended to amaze the people. It was a test of their faith and obedience.

He told his people:
“So leave her to eat within Allah's land and do not touch her with harm, lest there seize you a painful punishment.”

In another verse, Allah says:
“And inform them that the water is shared between them, each [section of] drink being attended [by turn].”

The presence of Saleh's she-camel tested whether the people would obey Allah's command. Prophet Saleh continued to warn them, but many of them remained arrogant and rebellious.
Allah says:
“And [We sent] to Thamud their brother Salih. He said, ‘O my people, worship Allah.’”

Saleh reminded them that Allah had created them and established them upon the earth. He encouraged them to seek forgiveness and return to Allah.
However, instead of accepting his advice, some of the people became increasingly hostile toward him and the divine sign they had been given.
Eventually, the people of Thamud committed a terrible act: they killed the she-camel despite the warning of Prophet Saleh.
Allah says:
“But they hamstrung her, so he said, ‘Enjoy yourselves in your homes for three days. That is a promise not to be denied.’”
(Quran 11:65)
The Quran describes this act as a serious violation of Allah's command. The people had been given a clear sign and a direct warning, yet they deliberately chose to destroy it.
In Surah Ash-Shams, Allah says:
“But they denied him and hamstrung her. So their Lord brought down upon them destruction for their sin and made it equal upon all of them.”
(Quran 91:14)
After the people killed the she-camel and continued rejecting Allah's warning, the punishment came upon them.

“So the earthquake seized them, and they became within their home [corpses] fallen prone.”
(Quran 7:78)
Another verse states:
“And the shriek seized those who had wronged, and they became within their homes [corpses] fallen prone.”

The destruction of Thamud was the consequence of their persistent rejection, arrogance, and violation of Allah's command.
