Umm Salama (Hind bint Abi Umayya)

Umm Salama (Hind bint Abi Umayya) was one of the noble wives of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and is remembered for her wisdom, patience, and deep faith. She lived through many struggles of the early Muslims and played a significant role in preserving the legacy of Islam. Among the Mothers of the Believers, Umm Salama stood out for her intelligence and her ability to give wise advice in moments of hardship.

Umm Salama was born in Makkah to a noble Qurayshi family. Her father, Abu Umayya, was known as Zād al-Rākib (the provider for travelers) because of his generosity. Growing up in such an environment shaped her character of kindness and dignity.

She married Abu Salama Abdullah ibn Abdul Asad, one of the early Muslims. Together, they embraced Islam despite facing persecution from the Quraysh. Their marriage was blessed with children and filled with mutual support in the path of faith.

One of the most emotional moments in her life was during the migration to Madinah. When Umm Salama and her husband Abu Salama tried to migrate, her family and his family separated them. She was held back with her child, while Abu Salama was forced to leave. For almost a year, Umm Salama endured hardship, waiting patiently until Allah reunited her with her husband and child in Madinah.

This sacrifice shows her strong faith and perseverance, qualities that later made her one of the most respected wives of the Prophet ﷺ.

After the death of her husband Abu Salama, Umm Salama was left as a widow with young children. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ honored her by marrying her, making her one of the Mothers of the Believers. She was known not only for her beauty but also for her sharp mind and wisdom.

One of the most famous moments that highlight Umm Salama’s intelligence was during the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah. After the treaty was signed, many companions felt disappointed because its terms seemed unfavorable. When the Prophet ﷺ asked them to end their state of Ihram, they hesitated. Umm Salama advised the Prophet ﷺ to lead by example—he should shave his head and sacrifice his animal first. When he did so, the companions immediately followed.

This wise suggestion calmed a very critical moment, showing her important role in guiding the Muslim community.

Umm Salama narrated many hadiths of the Prophet ﷺ, passing on knowledge to later generations. Her home became a place of learning, and companions often sought her advice. She lived many years after the Prophet ﷺ, witnessing important events in Islamic history and contributing to the preservation of Islamic teachings.
