Zaynab bint Jahsh

07 September, 2025

Zaynab bint Jahsh was born into the noble Quraysh tribe in Mecca. She was the daughter of Jahsh ibn Riyab and Umayma bint Abdulmuttalib, making her a cousin of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Known for her dignity, generosity, and deep faith, Zaynab grew up in a household respected for its lineage and honor.

Zaynab’s life took a unique turn when she married the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Their marriage carried great significance, as it highlighted important lessons in Islamic history. Zaynab had previously been married to Zayd ibn Harithah, the Prophet’s adopted son. After her separation from Zayd, Allah revealed verses in the Qur’an that permitted the Prophet to marry her, abolishing the pre-Islamic tradition of treating adopted sons like biological ones in matters of marriage.

This marriage was a divine decree mentioned in the Qur’an (Surah Al-Ahzab, 33:37), making Zaynab one of the few women whose marriage was ordained by revelation.

Zaynab was known for her piety, modesty, and generosity. She was deeply devoted to worship, often spending her nights in prayer and fasting frequently. One of her remarkable qualities was her charity; she loved giving to the poor and needy, earning the title of being among the most generous of the Prophet’s wives.

As one of the Mothers of the Believers, Zaynab held a respected place in the Prophet’s household. She was confident and outspoken yet deeply faithful. Her honesty and devotion to Islam made her a role model for Muslim women. She lived with dignity, always prioritizing faith over worldly matters.

Zaynab bint Jahsh passed away during the caliphate of Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA) in the year 20 AH. She was the first of the Prophet’s wives to pass away after him, and she was buried in Al-Baqi cemetery in Medina.

Her life remains a powerful example of faith, resilience, and devotion to Allah. Today, Zaynab is remembered as one of the most honorable women in Islamic history.
